Join Elder Jane Chartrand for an immersive nighttime experience rooted in traditional knowledge of the land, sky, and seasons.

For generations, Indigenous peoples have looked to the stars as a guide for living—informing travel, seasonal movement, and daily decision-making. In this guided experience, participants are introduced to these teachings through direct observation and shared knowledge.

As night falls, you will learn how to recognize seasonal star patterns and understand how they relate to cycles on the land. Elder Jane will share teachings about Grandmother Moon and the traditional moon cycles—such as the Freeze-Up Moon—and how these cycles signal changes in weather, water, and movement across the landscape.

Participants will also be guided to “listen” to the forest at night—developing awareness of subtle changes in sound, temperature, and atmosphere that can offer direction and insight. Time will be spent outdoors observing the sky, where possible including the Northern Lights, along with teachings about their cultural meaning and the respect they are shown.

This experience runs approximately 2–3 hours and can accommodate up to 18 participants.

This experience aligns with the spirit of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada Calls to Action, particularly:

  • Call to Action 62 – supporting education that includes Indigenous knowledge systems and ways of understanding the world

  • Call to Action 63 – fostering intercultural understanding, empathy, and respect

  • Call to Action 92 (Business & Reconciliation) – advancing respectful engagement with Indigenous knowledge and supporting Indigenous-led cultural experiences
